If you are sweeping your carpets, here's a tip from Mrs Beeton. Sprinkle the carpet with damp tea leaves, or fresh grass cuttings or aromatic leaves. These will prevent the dust from rising and will give the carpet a light scent. My mom always used to sprinkle the carpet with damp tea leaves :-)

Vinegar is a very economical and useful cleaning substance. Did you know vinegar is great for taking pet stains out of carpets?

The BEST way to clean carpet (cheaper way) is to spray the area with RESOLVE carpet cleaner. This is good JUST for the high traffic areas. The better way,(cost @ $30 total including chemicals and rental) is to rent a steam cleaner (Rug Doctor)The best method is of course,is to call a professional.(@ 10-15 $ per room) Of course it will depend on how dirty your carpet is a nd the last time it was cleaned.

I find that any stains the vacuum won't shift are usually tackled with 1001 Carpet spray. Takes a little while for the carpet to dry after the initial squirt but seems to do the trick.

If you have a very stubborn spot that will just not come out try this:
Mix a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid with warm water, pour a small amount of this mixture on the spot. Cover spot with an old white towel, and apply an iron (set to high with the steam option off) for a couple of seconds. The hot iron draws the moisture (the once soapy water is now steam) into the white towel. You may have to repeat this process several times, but I have never had a stain I could not get out with this method.
Good Luck!

I am so wanting to take the carpet munching path here, but I will say that there is a product on the market called Spot Shot that is a very potent cleaner in a can. AFter you have vacuumed and that hasn't worked, then some detergent with a sponge hasn't worked, then a shampoo'er hasn't worked, try the Spot Shot....at your local grocery store.

First you have to attack stain right away or it will get worse. But there are lots of stain remover prouducts at your local grocery store and most have a place where you can rent a carpet cleaner. It also depends on what kind of stain it is, chemical compisition (Oil based, water based, animal ,mineral or vegatable, etc.) And it also depends on your carpet type.

You could use a carpet shampoo but if you want it done properly, hire someone out and they will give it a deep clean.
