Do we ever stop really caring? It gets to matter less as you get older. At 50+ I feel free to say and do things I would never have done before. I figure they are going to say " She can't help it poor old thing", rather than "Who does she think she is? Pushy woman!"
However the opinions of those I hold dear are still extremely important to me and I hope they always will be.

It depends. Some opinions still matter to me, but mostly only opinions of people I care alot for- husband, children, family. Strangers are a different story- I pretty much do not place alot of value there. Happened in my late 20's

It happened in stages and different situations.
I knew from early terrible maltreamtne of me that my parents did not really love me. I then knew that their opinions were not in my best interest as a rule. I learned slowly to trust my own values and choices.
Years later, when I wanted to marry, my mother virtually was going to disown me for my choice. Her opinion was based on racism and fear-hatred. Mom went ballistic, throwing things, cursing, but I held my ground. I even told her that though she said she would not attend, she has 24 hours to change her mind. or it would be the last time ever she would see me, period.
Mom changed her mind the next day.
I learned over time that many people give opinions designed not to allow us to discover life on our pown, or else, their opinions are designed to hurt us in some way out of jealousy. I have also learned that our real friends support our desicions and opinions even if they disagree. They will help us gain clarity and encourage us, not discourage us.

What better way to make an intelligent decision than listen to the opinions of others. I hope that I never stop listening and considering others opinions, but likewise I hope I always choose to do what I think is right regardless of what others think or say.

Oh, you'll get all sorts of answers on this, but the reality of it is, they never stop mattering to you.
Unless you're an absolute sociopath (or sociophobe), everyone wants to be liked.
What happens is that those -people- whose opinions differ from you stop mattering to you.
The people you truly like? Their opinions always matter.

You can listen to other peoples opinions till the day you fall of the planet but you dont have to act upon what they say. You have your own opinions and it is always good to listen to other peoples opinions as long as you are not too intimidated to state your own, so that you can make up your own mind and of course form your own opinion. Dont you think? tee! hee! Of course this is just my own opinion.

I still care, what is wrong with that? I hope that other's peoples opinions always matter. I don't need to agree with them, but if that person believes it, I should respect that.

I have never cared of what people think of me when it came to my body shape, and I have a few extra pounds. But what they think of me when it comes to issues of family I still ask for opinions. I am now old as dirt.
