I was told that I could write a letter of invitation to him and he would need to take it to the Nigerian Embassy and I was wondering if that were true.

As we do not know where you are, thus which country needs to provide the visa, it is difficult to respond comprehensively.

However, it would make no sense for him to take the letter of invitation to the Nigerian embassy - he should attach it to his visa application and hand it in at your country's embassy.

Buyer beware, there are huge organized scams originating out of this country you cite. Do due diligence to check up. Call immigration attorneys to check all this out. Bringing in foreign brides is not as easy as the "scammers " try to make it seem. Watch out for the hook for sending money and airfare or telephone/ internet communication monies to your "fiance"

I was hooked on a girl from Russia and she turned out to be a phantom. This is possibly a scam you are involved with. I was so caught up in the thing I just thank God I didnt send any money and I talkked to an attorney who told me about the scam and got me to thinking and checking.

Check out google or yahoo search for "russian Scammer Women" Or Nigerian Bride scams or similar and again" buyer beware" Hope this helps you like that attorney helped me and if it does or doesnt still please spread the word. These scams are absolutely rampant on sites like yahoo personals, match.com and many others. Good luck and if I am wrong I apologize but rather have you warned than scammed and sad by that.
