George Jones if you like a steel guitar and hurtin', Jerry Reed if you like fun, Shania Twain if you like cross-over, Johnny Cash for the story and sincerity, Gretchan Wilson for fun, etc. In other words listen and determine what direction you want because Country music is life (trains, cars, hurtin', love, pain, fun...in short, if you listen long enough to country music, you'll hear your own story) And Country has evolved from the likes of Hank and the Carter Family to the upbeat "Big 'n Rich", etc. No collection can be complete without a good sampling of each. Get CDs from your local Library, watch CMT and listen to radio to get a "flavour. And listen and follow an instrument of your choice as you listen to an artist/song over and over. Cry or laugh, etc.

Depends if you are looking for old country, new country or blue grass. Garth Brooks is good and John Michael Montgomery, Lonestar, and Gretchen Wilson has a few good redneck songs.
Willie Nelson has some very good classics and his voice suits a variety of other songs too. check out your local library or C&W station for artists.

It all depends. If you are looking for an artist that is liked by many, then it would have to be Garth Brooks. He has tuned many people on to country music.
If you are looking for something more beachy, then it would have to be Kenny Chesney.
If you are looking for a current artist with more traditional type music then I would say to go with Brad Paisley.
