When people say that they hate Americans are they talking about mostly white Americans?

I'm from Australia and I can say that, unfortunately I do know people who say that they "hate" Americans, in referrence to the average white American person.

I think they get this view through the media that American's are pig-headed, materialistic, 'bigger-is-better' egotists, or that Americans are 'dumb' because they invest in projects that some people here may not embrace as being 'worthwhile' (i.e. The Hollywood sign) or think that there are aspects about the culture which prove American's to be less intelligent or tuned-in as other cultures (the amount of obesity, the materialism, the 'white-picket-fence' 'All American Dream' stuff, etc.)

While a lot of this stuff most likely isn't true at all about Americans, and it's quite probable that the average American person thinks in exactly the same way that an average Aussie, Brit or other westener might, you have to remember that there's a dodgy messenger coming between the countries- sending messages that are biased, incomplete and untrue- twisting words and situations until they fit a description which sells to other societies.

People shouldn't be judgmental-- but look at how Australia is marketted to the US- I've come across people who believed, by what they'd seen in the media, that I lived in a house in the middle of the desert, wore a hat with crocodile teeth on it, had a pet koala, talked like Crocodile Dundee or Steve Irwin and rode a kangaroo to school- if I were to send a photograph of my home or the area I live in, any American could easily mistake it for a street in their own country-- the media markets every country in a different way, because it is what sells-- they say that Aussies are all dumb hicks that spend their days wrestling crocodiles and that Americans are money-hungry idiots who all live behind white picket fences because it's what helps them to cash-in.

And yes, it's predominantly the white-american people that I hear discriminatory comments made against, but that isn't to say that I don't hear a lot of criticism against African-Americans- particularly with their music videos and 'sexoholic' music image.

It's just plain old racism right across the board.

Disregard the people who say they hate all Americans, They're just being stupid. But you have to admit that America as a Nation, as represented by its gouvernment, has given the world the image of a rather stupid, arrogant bully. And if you see what some people write onthis site....try to see it through the eyes of a foreigner and make up your own mind..

May be because they still see the blacks as people who do not make decisions in America - We only see Condie as a black in the fore front ya ? Probably it is because of that people who hate America hates the Whites - I don't hate America or the Whites or the Blacks !

nooooo......its the government and their policies tat they hate....I have been to America a few times...I find the ppl very nice..tho Lincoln once said 'Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth. ' but in reality...do u see them doin anything for the people, and the people who are elected are they the ones who walk among u everyday...or are they the ones who are born with a silver spoon(gold sometimes) and dont know wat the everyday man has to endure...
