More to the point, at what stage in the development of civilization did (male) monogamy become the desired norm. As there is ample evidence of polygamy in other cultures, I wonder if it is mainly a Judeo-Christian concept, and when this developed?

Monogamy is a Judeo-Christian concept.
The Bible supports polygamy unequivocally and without a doubt.
Monogamy ? No thanks
It just doesn't work as designed.

The latest research shows that women are not naturally monogamous either.

Ever wonder why men fall asleep quickly after sex & women don't.... that's when she can sneak accross the cave to be with another bloke.

Seriously, though its true. Human women are not naturally monogamous.

The 'big three' religions are obsessed with monogamy, particularly for women, because they are patriarchal religions and ensuring that women didn't sleep around, by making it socially unacceptable, or by locking them up in the house and not allowing them out except with a chaperone and then covered from head to toe... was the only way to ensure that a man's children were really his.

This idea that men need to be monogamous is fairly recent and has only come about as it was agreed to be unfair to only expect this behavour from women.

The 'big three' view sex as evil and to be controlled rather than something to be celebrated. If you don't agree with it don't practice it.

These days 'serial monogamy' seems to be acceptable in western countries. i.e. people have several sexual partners during their life time, but are loyal to the current one while the relationship is maintained.

Human society doesn't expect anyone to be monogamous, it people want to go round sleeping with whom they please then so be it, those same people need to be aware that they are leaving themselves open to STD's too and should not expect others to fork out for their grubby lifestyle when the proverbial hits the fan.
Have you ever loved someone so much you would give your life for them? If the answer to this is yes, then why on earth would you feel like that about someone then go out and sleep with someone else, you pay a much higher price for been non monogamous and not always in the way of money.

Once vows are said to another person, man or woman should be mature enough to keep the vows they said to another. Don't marry if you do not feel you can be monogamous. Make your word your bond. That is a real man.

It probably developed when people realised that women deserve respect, and are not objects to be bought and sold to the highest dowry bidder. Get back to your cave.
