Well, I don't know what would be in his eye that would be so embarrassing, but if it is then you should really just tell him, quietly:
"Joe, you should go to the bathroom and look in the mirror because there is something in your eye."

just politely tell him that he has something in his eye. Most people won't be offended, maybe a little embarassed but nothing that is going to cause emotional trauma.
