So have you set up your sound system as if you unplug them and then replug them in different sockets you may not have any sound. The next thing is what sound system do you have,i have Realtrack AC97 Audio myself and it needs setting up for speakers and a head set plus the microphone.Look at the bottom right of your screen you will have a small speaker on the task bar click your mouse on this and check its settings, bring up the panel and have they been muted in the bottom left corner if yes click on the box and remove the tick and try again, to see if your head set is working have you tested your head set on a CD player or another device to see if they work? you then know if no you need a new set but if yes then you know you have to set up your computer on the 3 jack sockets via the software. So find the sound system you are using and check it out or find someone that can help you to reset it.

Do your speakers work when plugged in the same socket? Where are you plugging the headset in to? Make sure it is the headset and not a faulty socket on your computer before buying a new headset. Unusual for both channels to go at once - if it's stereo. So maybe the earth lead has disconnected in the plug. Maybe, if you're handy with a soldering iron you could put a new plug on. If you have an old set - most of us do. Use the lead and plug off that. You have 2 insulated wires and an earth lead around them shielding them. Cut the lead off the old set and the plug off the set that's not working and connect the two insulated wires together and then the earths. Insulate them with tape or something. probably twisting the wires together will do if you don't have a soldering iron. You could buy new ones - but most people have bits lying around you can make up in to a new lead.

If you are sure that your pc is working perfectly, then you need to go back to where the headset was purchased and exchange it for a good one. Good luck.
