When im abroad it amazes me the number of people who think Scotland is an region/county in England
But on the other hand they always seem to prefer us Scots to English, so they recognise the people but not the country. Can anyone shed any light on this phenomenon.
Oh and i blame the BBC and TV as a whole. On phone ins we have John from the tiny hamlet of Pimple, and Bill from Scotland. Its a joke

Probably not, its the same here in Wales - most foreigners assume Wales is "part of England".
I don't mind them thinking of it as part of the UK or part of Britain but we are not part of England, we are separate to them.
I gotta say though, as a Welsh person I have met many Scots, some are lovely, but my God some are so arrogant and aggressive!!! I actually prefer most of the English people I know they are more laid back and friendly.
I also know plenty of arrogant aggressive Welshmen sadly, which I am ashamed to say. The types who assume that to be a real "Welsh" person you have to be aggressive and obnoxious to every Englishman you meet. I find this sad and embarassing and I do not share their views. I love my English boyfriend, he's a darling!!!

When foreign visitors come to Scotland they see it as different from England. When they just visit London, they see it as part of the UK, or GB.
It is sometimes useful to have a separate identity, and sometimes useful to have a joint identity. Just like it is sometimes useful to say you are European, even though there are many different identities in Europe.
People are most tightly bonded to the society they grew up in regardless of where they currently live. The narrowness of that category and locality depends to a large degree on the need to unite.
If there is a force acting against your best interests (eg. the English), then the Scottish exist as a nation. If the country was not treated separately, and distinct, then it would have no need for a separate identity in order to unite against the English.
It is a historic issue, which does not go away if the whole nation is not treated as one nation. The more separation you introduce, the more nationalistic the country becomes. It is destructive, but the forces that cause it are the same forces that cause terrorism. If you take advantage of a union, it causes ill feeling. This escalates into a tit for tat battle in political wastes of money laundering tax payers money in indiscriminate ways because it is being done elsewhere.
It is childish for sure. How do you resolve such a childish battle between siblings?

I'm English and i see Scotland as a separate country and always have but i think that people sometimes get confused when Scots are asked where they are from they say the UK and a lot of foreigners see the UK as England alone not England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland

I spoke to somebody from Denmark whose lecturer had been teaching his class that Scotland was a region of England. What a numpty. I was enraged!
Vote SNP in the Scottish parliament elections next year and we'll soon fix that.
Ooh, and here is something funny - the spell checker did not recognise SNP!
It might help if we didn't speak so much English as well.

I canny understand it either. Why do eg French people and folk from the US love Scots, but most think we're part of England?
I blame the BBC to a large extent too. And Sky. It's even worse

Until recently I thought England == Great Britain. Now I know. I also know that Scottish, Irish and Welsh consider themselves a totally different nation and have another main language. I overheard some Scottish once and was terrified not to understand a word!

The same goes for The Duchy of Cornwall. People think it is a county, but it is as separate as The Principality of Wales.
