People that have sucky lives of their own have to make up for it by placing themselves in other peoples lives in hopes that their lives wont suck no more. Celeberties are just the people that they use the most. Maybe they think if they know so much about them that makes them a part of their family.

I agree, new "celebrities" seem to crawl out of the woodwork every night on the E! channel. They're always gushing about some new rapper as if he's been around forever (while I've never heard of him--Kanye West????) or talking endlessly about some celebritys' love life. I hate E! News Daily and their cutesy way of talking about these people. Your friend probably lives a boring, uneventful life, and is exactly the target audience for these celebrity-saturated entertainment "news" shows. As the recent Teen Choice Awards show demonstrated, these people are totally arrogant, full of themselves, and they think they're hilarious. It was embarrassing to watch. Our standards of what is true entertainment has declined tremendously. Everyone thinks that what these people do is so fascinating, that they themselves have come to believe it. They even incorporate some of the antics from their personal lives into their public appearances (like when Nick Lachey said that being on the Teen Choice Awards was "awkward"). These people don't retain their fame through performing or recording anymore. They stay famous through the coverage they get in the tabloids. That is pathetic and embarrassing. I would love to nail some of these young bimbos, but outside of that, it seems all they're good for is exemplifying our fascination with the lowest common denominator of self-obsessed, conceited, childish behavior. It's like watching a bunch of high school kids putting on a talent show. I don't think our society has ever had this kind of glut of celebrities, to where we create them out of people who have no talent and have contributed nothing--like Paris Hilton. And she buys right into it. She has no clue. Most of us are laughing at her.

Some people need something interesting to talk about. Maybe their own lives are just that uninteresting. Its a conversation that most people can join in, too. Not everyone can talk about brain surgery.

Because of money and fame.Have you ever noticed the more money a celeb has or the more fame the hotter the celeb is.It's just like putting food in the microwave the higher the number the hotter it gets.

it's pathetic when people just start gushing over some celebrity's new car or new dog..they're too obsessed to think about their own lives..maybe they think their lives are boring..it's probably because they want to go to another world..

I really have absolutely no idea... I've wondered the same thing myself. I mean, they are just people...the only difference is they have lots of money and are talked about on tv ALL the time. Good question though.

The American culture worships 'FALSE idols'. And the idiots who worship celebrities, will overlook their neighbor who is in 'need' because of their self-absorbed obsession.

because they have seriously taken over the globe. it is ridiculous! they are everywhere. you can't go to the store without seeing something they have designed or seeing them on the cover of almost every magazine. tv shows are made about them (ex vh1 and e!) and radio shows discuss them. celebrites have become household names which might explain why your friend talks about them like they are family.
