Famous is a celebrity who is very popular.
Popular could be anybody who has a lot of friends and people who are jealous of them.
For me, neither.

Famous – Famous people are well known by others but not much loved by others. For example, Osama Bin Laden. He is famous, but not everybody likes him. Notorious people can be Famous but not Popular.
Popular – Popular people are Famous and loved by others too. For example; Princess Diana. She is so Famous & Popular. As everyone knows her and love her. Good people can be Famous as well as Popular.

Popular refers to now current the moment while a person can be famous now and forever. Fame is based on notoriety - - - a person can be unpopular yet famous some people are famous for being unpopular. Peace.

Famous has more to with celebrities, where popularity has more to do with what common people think is popular.

Keep in mind you don't have to be popular to 'still' be famous. O.J. is still very famous but his popularity faded a bit. See the difference?

People need to like you for you to be popular, you don't need people to like you to be famous, you just need a lot of people to know who you are.. For example,
Wayne Gretzky is popular in Canada.
Issac Newton is a famous historical figure.
