I've heard that there will not be a 4th series of HBO's Deadwood - what have you heard?

Yes, it was effectively cancelled earlier this year, when HBO and Milch could not come to terms for a fourth season. HBO did not pursue the options on contracts with the actors freeing them for other work.

In June, it was announced - as a result of continued negotiations and interest by fans and crew - that there will be two two-hour movies to finish up Milch's story arc.

This article is a good summary:

According to this writeup, the show - at $5M per episode - was too expensive, and Milch understood that.

And this is another excellent description of the show's ending.

Tentatively, these movies will be filmed in spring/summer 2007, according to the blog of W. Earl Brown, who plays Dan.

" Although this is the end of the trail for "Deadwood" as a series, HBO has reached an agreement with David Milch, the Western drama's creator and executive producer, to wrap up the major stories. Milch and the cast will saddle up for a couple of two-hour movies, rather than a full-blown fourth season.

No dates have been announced for these "Deadwood" movies, but, when the second one is on the way, we'll truly be heading for the last roundup. "
