His album The Best of Johnny Cash is one I favour, Released by Columbia in 1996. It has some live recordings from the famous San Quentin prison, and some Bob Dylan cover versions. He collaborated with him in later life.
You're not an idiot to have missed him amongst the millions of recording artists out there, easily done 'cos you can't hear it all.
Hope this was of some help to you.
Good luck in your search.
P.S. If you like Johnny Cash, you might also like Michelle Shocked. Check out her album "Short, Sharp Shock", it's great!

Best place to start is the 2CD 'Essential Johnny Cash' that has all of his best known early songs on it. You could also try 'Live at San Quentin Prison' or 'Live at Folsom Prison' for examples of his live performance and stage presence.

Riding the rails---> it's his best album. all his songs are more in a story telling way recorded on that album, about the history and his personal feeling of the "old" days... Boss Jack is a title that comes from that album, maybe you know it
