Hi there, im in high school, and ive got an exam tommorow, and would like your opinion. You see, i have to write about the film Shawshank Redemption, and it uses a lot of forshadowing (e.g. the main character - Andy .. rebels , as a sign of events to come - when he escapes from prison)..and so on, Anyways, the essay question would be 'Explain how film techniques are used in this film'.. I know that these include things like voice over narrative, camera shots, etc. but i was wondering if forshadowing is one, as it seems very interesting to write about? THANKS SO MUCH!

Foreshadowing can be considered part of the narration. As such, it IS considered a film technique because it pertains to how the director or scriptwriter chooses to tell the story.

By foreshadowing, the director or scriptwriter sets the audience up to expect certain events to happen.

Yes, although forshadowing originated as a literary technique, it also applies in film, and should definitely be included in your paper if you want it to be considered complete.

I took a class about a year ago on film in college. I don't ever remember "foreshadowing" being a technique. Here is a link that may help you call it a better term that film people use. Hope this helps...

Yes I believe it would be called a film technique, especially when it's written in the script.
