Americans have gone WAAAAY too far with the PC BS (and I AM American, so don't go on saying I'm anti-American) I just think the PC thing is rediculous. I don't care what the situation is, changing all the words to make them sound "nicer" when you're actually changing the meaning is stupid. As for the cartoons, they're historic and should not be banned. If you don't want your kids to see them, monitor what your kids watch! Be a parent! Do your job! You can't expect the country to do everything for you and you certainly can't blame an old cartoon that a kid may have seen and paid attention to, for a kid deciding to smoke years later! If they want them out of those two cartoons, I suggest getting them out of every movie, TV show, ad, etc. Even then, kids will smoke though and people will find someone to blame.

I can't say that the matter of old cartoons is a hot button issue for me, but the entire issue of political correctness is of deep concern. When majority 'group think' endangers the prerogatives of individuals & minority groups, there is a distinct threat to the traditional way of life that we have enjoyed. We should be very careful of those who argue for imposed values. PC is a slippery slope.

No they shouldn't be banned. I grew up watching Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Sylvester & Tweety, and several others. I haven't watched these cartoons since I was a little kid. ...but anyways...watching these cartoons never caused me to start blowing things up, smoking (never even tried it), or anything else for that matter.
I think it is up to the parents to tell their children what is acceptable behavior and what isn't.

I don't think they should be banned... but if I rent one more DVD compilation with Whoopi Goldberg lecturing me on racism in early Hollywood... AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

No, seriously, I watched those cartoons as a kid and didn't equate the stereotypes (e.g., Mammy Two-Shoes from "Tom & Jerry") to be the model of what all black people were like. Some people - unfortunately, not all - know the difference between a cartoon and real-life.

Political correctness sucks. Say what's on your mind. Fart in a crowded elevator. Read "Playboy" in the middle of a NOW convention. Be an individual - just like all your friends!

Yes, PC has gone berserk, and it is insane! We are doing to ourselves what Big Brother did to the people in the novel 1984, by re-writing the past, to make it seem as though things were always that way. This is propaganda, plain and simple. And no good can come from a lie. It is not that the method was applied improperly, the method itself is wrong. No good can come from lying and trying to re-write history. It will only require more and more lies to cover up for the fact that it is a lie.

(That is what Holocaust deniers do!)

(Will we actually fool ourselves into thinking that there was never any smoking, drinking or bigotry...? Then how did things get as bad as they are today...? Things sure have gone downhill...!)

Imagine if they cut out all the scenes where the Three Stooges were shown hitting, kicking, punching and hurting each other, because "...little kids shouldn't be shown violence"...! There would be nothing left! The humor is entirely because we UNDERSTAND that if that really happened, they would be seriously injured!

People who push for PC have NO sense of humor and NO imagination. Those who can't understand that have an emotional disorder. And people who think that there are exceptions to that, are only deceiving themselves.

I never knew anyone that smoke say they started smoking because they seen it on Tom and Jerry. Usually it was because of a older sibling, or mother or father that they seen smoking. Song of the South is one of the racist movies that Disney made because of the the creatures are analogies of black people. And those animals are what white people thought of black people as.
Not just in America, in Mexico and other countries, the character with coal black skin and thick red lips is a stereotype for black people that they portray as slow, aimless, dumb, and lazy. This image hurts not just black people but the other nationalities because of the racist outlook of a few people now classify their race as racist.
Not everything done on television and in the movies are done for entertainment purposes only. Think when you watch certain shows and movies, look at the racial or sexist overtones of the picture. And think.
As for banning them. I think a museum should be made contain all of these cartoons, and the race that is being exploited should watch these cartoons and know that there are people in the world that see you in such a negative light. It would be a wake up call for a lot of people.

I think we have gone overboard with polical correctness. I understand how some feel hurt by the satire in old cartoons but I don't see the need to outright ban them.

I'm part Irish, but I don't get upset about how the Irish are portrayed.
