OMG at some of the answers on here. Guess it's one way for me to get a good laugh this time of the night. ok, Do this first...Cut the t-stat to the ON position, making sure the Heat-Off_AC is in the OFF position, Go to the inside unit and listen if the motor comes on, or see if you can feel air from the vents. If Not, Make sure the cover(door) on the inside unit is on good, Most inside units have a switch on the door, If not closed properly, It's supposed to kill the whole system, But ya never know. Only two other options and not sure I want to say in this, we wouldnt want anyone getting shocked, YIM if you want to know the others lol

How old is it? I would turn the air to make sure it is on, then go out to the unit to see if the motor is even trying to turn. You will hear a humming. If so, turn it off right away, open the housing and make sure the fan blade is not obstructed. Try to spin it yourself with your hand. If it is not trying to turn when you turn the AC on, then you either have a loose power connection or a burnt-out motor. Call an AC guy.

Check the drain pan. I had one clog on an inside unit (usually two parts). If the pan fills the interior unit will not work.

Your furnace is the culprit downstairs or a relay between your t-stat and furnace is malfuctioning. If The blower motor is not functioning downstairs try flipping the breakers at the electrical box off and on first.

its probably your compressor is damaged. The sound you hear from the unit is just the fan and check also the last time you top up the gas..

have you checked the filter? if you don't clean it it gets clogged with dust and cannot take air in to blow it out.
