hold their knife and fork in the same way, shouldn't the left handed person have the fork in their right hand and vice versa?

I'm a lefty and hold my knife and fork the way they're set but I know tw oright handed people who turn them around. I actually think that table settings are more suited to left handed people. When you think about it, if you are eating wiht only a fork most right handed poeple will use their right hand and left handed people thier left, which is how it's meant to be anyway. Since the majority are right handed I am going to fight your corner and say we chage the way tables are set to suit you!!!

It is proper etiquette to cut with the right hand (knife), & hold the food with the fork (left hand), then put the knife down & eat with the right hand (switch which hand the fork is in). This started a LONG time ago. I, personally, like the view of the Japanese: food should be served so that the person eating it should not have to cut anything... just eat it.

I am left-handed and I hold my knife and fork the same as a right handed person, simply because it is easier. I.E. when I go out to a restaurant, the place setting is always for a right handed person, so I just adapted. When I was a kid my dad used to set the table the other way round for me, but doesn't bother any more, simply coz I manage.

I'm a leftie, so I hold my fork in my left hand. That seems obvious enough. When I also need a knife, I pick one up with my right hand. This also seems pretty obvious to me.
In fact, I never got that whole switching hands routine by right-handed people :-)

I'm left handed and when eating with a knife and fork i use the fork in my right hand but when eating with just a fork i use it in my left hand.

Most left handed people have adapted to the 'right handed' world. there is a special website dedicated to left handed items www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk that sells items designed to be used by left handed people. i am 21 yrs old and i still cannot use right handed scissors most people laugh but being left handed poses its problems.

I am left handed and i use my fork to place the food into my mouth with my left had because it is more steady. I use the knife in my right hand just to cut with because i am only cutting and not putting anything in my mouth.

Table etiquette dictates with which hand you are to hold your knife and fork. People are usually raised to hold it in a particular hand based on the common practice in their society.

Apparently most Americans hold their fork in their right hand.....can anyone shed light on that?

They have cheque books for lefties....strange that they do not need knifes and forks :P

The stronger arm/hand holds the knife the other one the fork
But some people might be lefties and righties at the same time

maybe cuz children are taught to hold a knife and fork before anyone realises which hand is dominant. most toddlers eat with cuttlery (albeit messily), and have not yet started to draw or write.

the american thing about different hands is something to do with loyalties during their civil war. if you held them one way you were a royalist, and the other way meant that you were a rebel.
