What a thankless job being a cold caller must be?

Do these people ever manage to sell anything at all. I know they're taught to use all the tricks in the book to get a sale, but surely they must realise that were're not all guilible or are we? Share your funny or otherwise stories of how you deal with cold callers.

I have a friend who puts her answering machine to good use. She replaced the default answering message with " If your're selling double glazing or kitchen then we don't want to buy thank you; Goodbye!"

By people I meant the power behind the throne..the employer. Sorry yes I know it must be thankless job and I always try to be respectful when folk call up trying to sell something. Just out of interest do you work on commission when you cold sell? I have always wondered.

I used to work for sky and yes i did get sales Very hard but got at least 8 sales a day and the target was 2,.

you need to think of this, listen to what they are selling then say OK do i need this, if yes you ask Q's if no then just tell the truth remember they are only doing a job be polite put yourself in their shows.

It is a horrible job. I did it when I was at uni because I could earn much more money doing that than anything else that was available and I couldn't be fussy.

The only times I made a sale if when people were already genuinely interested in it, and were planning to puruse the service so when I called they were happy enough to hear from me. It did happen enough to meet targets.

It's really harsh to be rude and play tricks on these people as they're perfectly nice normal people- probably just students like I was, or parents who need really flexible hours. The amount of times people called me a waste of space or asked me what was so wrong with me I felt the need to ring them up while they were having their dinner.... I was just a normal girl who needed a job while she was studying to minimise the debt I'd end up with. That should be admired.

Just tell them thank you but you're really not interested and would like to be removed from the database, and wish them luck. If you're unhappy that your phone number has been released for marketing purposes just go on the TPS, because that's the only way to stop it- telemarketing is legimimate and legal, so the company who calls you isn't doing anything wrong and the poor sod who's paid to talk is especially not.

It is thankless. I used to work in a call centre myself and it would be nice to work there somedays and other day's you get horrible ppl.

Why do you refer to them as "these ppl"? We are human ppl who also don't like getting these nuiscance calls.

But it's a job to be done in order to receive money in return to keep us from poverty. Not everyone had the opportunity to go to college and get degree's. So, "these ppl" are simply earning a living, the best way they can.

So, yes it is thankless, but the sooner you realise that we just ppl 2 who also have feelings, the better off we all will be and carry on living a happy life.

When a (mature) student, I had a part-time job cold-calling to houses to interview people for market research purposes. It was okay when I wasn't too busy, and I found that people were on the whole quite helpful. I wasn't trying to sell anything, simply going through a questionnaire set out by someone else to find out why people bought products or services. It wasn't a bad job, but it could be time-consuming. But on the whole I was happier when I finished that job.

If people in general had the self-respect not to take jobs as cold-callers, the practice would cease, and this 'thankless job' would die-out. The last thing anybody is going to get from me is thanks when they cold-call me and try to sell me double-glazing or some other crap when I am relaxing at home.

The referees hands down. Perfection is expected from the refs. When they call a good game, they are invisible to fans and it was the great play of the team that won the game. If they make mistakes it's all their fault and they are awful. I guess the truth is, nobody is perfect and the refs make mistakes just like the players do. Case and point: After the games if the home team wins, nobody is cheering the refs as they skate off. If the home team loses, sometimes the refs get the blame and are booed off the ice.
