Forget the act of judgement here, but do you think that humans as a whole and on a biological level, act in their own interests or in the best interests of humanity whatever thay may be ?

I think the answer to that question can be refered to any other species beyond humans. Each individual, whether a human, an animal, a plant and so on, lives in order to survive - that's the main purpose in our lives. Survival should be understood not only as a matter of existence but also as successful reproduction. If we take a more general look on the problem we will see that the particular species and the Life itself depend on the survival of the single individual. In other words, we do act "in interest" of humanity as well as in our own interest. On the other hand, nature has its means of regulation of the numbers of individuals in a population through the process of natural selection, which is also essential for the survival of the species. The problem, according to me, is that we destroy this balance in trying to eleminate some of the factors of natural selection.

I think as a whole, they act in the best interests of humanity. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of baddies out there. But look at primitive villages and how the whole community works together for the good of the entire village. Also, look at community service and volunteer organizations. I look at my kid's school where there are people (old, young, rich, poor) coming in all the time to mentor students, and they don't have kids in the school. There are a lot of people helping other people for more reasons than their own interests.

Good or Bad - things are relative. When a murderer kill anyone for thept it is considered as bad, but when a soldier kills another soldier to protect his land it is considered as good. The motive is important. Their acts & their motives are mostly influenced by genes. So due to genetic reason humans mostly act in their own interests but in some cases human act for the interests of humanity. The proportion is different but both types are present. You can see the best example in the HINDI movie GUIDE where a person thief in nature fasts for rain in Famine region for the sake of farmers & finally die but do not release fast because they believe when one keep fast it rains in famine region.

i think with just a few exceptions most people at one time or other try to be good to fellow humans & to other living beings.
as far as biological level is considered humans always work in their own interest to make their life easy & all....but many a times while doing so we unintentionally harm other beings & some times face the consequences of our own actions.

Humans are all messed up, we're born that way. However, we're born with different levels of control. The people who best control their impulses are good, the people who lack control are bad. Based upon perception of society as a whole of course.

I think on the whole people follow the "Golden Rule". In an Emergency ,though; I think people will look after themselves and their families first~~~~regardless of what they have to do.

A bit of both i think. I think we try to do the best for the planet, as long as it means we dont have to get our hands dirty or to a bit of extra work...
