It is like driving a very big SUV or van, but is more dangerous. You need to be more alert especialy when going through an intersection with lights and sirens on. A lot of ambulances are old and beat up, so they don't accelerate, turn, or break like they should. Most ambulances have a longer breaking distance, wider turning radius, and slower acceleration than most other vehicles.
They are designed to take a beating, be driven over rough ground, give a smooth ride (as some people need to stand up at times to give care), and go over curbs. Because they are designed to do this they sacrifice the ease of driving, so it drives like a truck than a sedan.

If you can drive an SUV, you can drive an ambulance. It's easy. But you have to get a special license to drive an ambulance. Also, when going through red lights, you need to watch for other vehicles to make sure you don't get hit.

My dad was an ambulance officer for 32 years... I dont think its any harder than any other vehicle... i think they're actually designed to be easy to drive given the demands on the driver. The difficulty (as others have said) is driving a huge, heavy vehicle at high speeds. I know my dad had to do a specialist driving course (the same one that cops do) as part of their training so they know how to handle the car at high speed, in wet weather, heavy traffic etc. And contrary to popular belief, they go very very slowly through red lights...

i can imagine u would need great skill to be an ambulance driver. espically when going to an emergency and have to bypass other cars etc at a great speed while being safe at the same time. i guess driving it at a normal speed would be easy tho.

The job isn't easy becuase you have to drive around all day while someone is dying behind your back while the siren makes your head feel 5 times heavier than it should!
But driving the actual car doesn't actually differ from any other car!

My father did it and it's like driving a truck, but you'll need to wear the ear muffs because it's so noisy with the sirens on that you would go deaf without it. He's kinda lost his hearing.
