THE MATRIX
It’s the opening of the minds eye to the seen but unseen reality around you. In doing so you have to make choices, choices that will drastically affect the way you reason and perceive the word around you.
The Matrix is as real as your reflection. The more you discover the truth about reality the more you want to escape from it. Reality as we see it is an illusion. That is way know matter how hard you try to be perfect, imperfection always upsets the balance.
To escape you must free your mind. Question everything, the answer is on your finger tips.
The is no need to take the blue or red pill.

"Oh Matrix!" That's what they said on the old Carry On films.
Anyway the Matrix is a series of films about a computerised reality where people live - it basically spins the simple premise of Cartesian radical scepticism into a longwinded action film.
A similar idea to this (and also called the Matrix) was used in an episode of Doctor Who in the mid 70's.

Robots grow humans in fields to use electricity made by their bodies as an energy source. To keep the humans healthy, the robots must keep the humans minds stimulated so they create an imaginary world where the humans think they are interacting. This world is a complicated computer programme known as the Matrix.

A computer programme made by robots. They've connected all the people to this virtual reality (the matrix) so they don't know of the real world and the fact that robots control them.

In a way, you're right, It could be a religion:
1) It was made up by man
2) There's no proof, either way, of it's existence
3) It's basis is a belief
4) If you believe in it, You could develop enlightement in yourself.
5) Perhaps, a thousand years down the line, people would follow the storyline, and believe it to be true, and Neo is their Messiah.
(I reckon the bible's a work of fiction, so I think this is possible.)
