..coming from someone who has been diagnosed with vague disorders like depression and anxiety. I've been in a psychiatric ward for a long time too, and been treated for all kinds of different 'symptoms'..

Aren't these so-called illnesses just attempts to capitalise on basic fears and anxieties that most of us have already? I mean, some symptoms of illness are just unfashionable personality traits. It's normal to be angry, upset, frustrated, in pain for long periods of time because everyone does so, so it can't exactly be abnormal to be normal.

But with more complex issues- like learned behaviour, psychosis and obsessive personalities.. should they be decategorised (sp?) as actual illnesses? should psychological anaylsis (in psychiatric terms) be a lot more brutal?

could say i'm a sucker for punishment..

no. you suffered it yourself and should know better.

when someone has cancer, people classify it as a 'real' illness.
but when someone suffers from mental illness, it is often seen as weakness.

people in general should be educated about it. but unfortunately, it is very difficult to gain acceptance in certain parts of the world, especially in asian countries.

many mental illnesses are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, misfiring and abnormal activity in the connections in the brain, hormone imbalances in other glands and a variety of other reasons. these are not weaknesses or character flaws any more than cerebral palsy, cancer, diabetes or any other *physical* illnesses are. the brain is still part of the body and can also become ill like any other body part.

some people use the term mental illness too loosely to describe a bad hair day and too many doctors are willing to diagnose without proper testing, which just complicates matters further for those who truly have some sort of mental illness.

Don't take it so hard on yourself .. yes there is something called mental illness!! or else they would not have created the Term ..
I think you should have more close friends .. those you can talk to and discuss anything without them just pushing you away .. family members could do the job too .. and have a vacation go somewhere you never went .. and try to relax and HAVE a vacation and do not think of anything that disturbs you .. hope you'll feel better soon

some people's minds aren't as strong as others. and there are people who can't control a lot in their own behavior. i believe that's where the line crosses into a disorder. when it's not exactly fixable on ones own even with the knowledge of the problem. granted, some docs will just throw out any term to make someones neurosis seem not so severe, it's not the case for everyone. the terms "depression" and "anxiety" were made for the ones who actually had a "bigger" case of it than the normal population and couldn't help themselves.

jackasses play the sick card just like they plead insanity or blame tv for violence to help themselves. but there ARE insane people and for some, tv DID teach them to be cruel

No they are NOT just excuses, you sound like Tom Cruise. Most people that suffer depression or other mental illness can tell you it's not something they can turn on and off, I think people are very insensitive to the sufferers because of lack of understanding...and knowledge.

yes, you could say you are a sucker for punishment, but let's not, okay? most of the above mentioned are real illnesses, tho i have seen people use them for their own benefit. each case is different and nothing makes me madder than hearing someone say, 'it;s all in your head'!!!
