There is little incentive for politicians to help the homeless. They pay no taxes, they make no waves, and they generally don't vote.
Only for the persons whose altruistic gene has been activated, is there reason to help these unfortunate people. Mental health and substance abuse problems abound, and in many cases are probably contributing factors to their homelessness.
IMHO, a society is measured by how well it treats its most downtrodden. I would give the USA a C(-) on that one.

It is true that a lot of homeless people do have a mental illness and cannot get the help they need and medication. This is a global problem and they should have rights too. If you have more than most homeless people then maybe your town needs to accomodate them with a shelter or something. You might like to contact your local member and see what can be done. However, dont forget some people do like the homeless lifestyle and trying to convert them to what we consider to be normal living standards may not go down well with all of them.

You are a kind and caring soul.
One way you can help is to" KEEP " bringing your local politicians attention to it.
Somehow, they, the homeless, have become invisible to those who are in a position to help.
If your town really wants to do something--they need to apply for a grant, take an unoccupied building and convert it to a homeless shelter. They also need to utilize some of those funds to help homeless families obtain federal subsidized housing and become part of the work force again.
Some people are there through no fault of their own, factories close or downsize, medical problems deplete assets and leave them homeless, Mental illness and the inability to afford the necessary medications ect.
There are so many factors in this--you have to figure. i.e.,
"Gainfull Employment" is not easy to find. You cannot live on a minimun wage. Many of our homeless are families with children.
Unless you are rich.........keep in mind, We are all just a pay check away from being homeless.
I commend you for caring.
God Bless you!
and Good Luck

Some people prefer to live that way. I've been in shelters myself.
Many have serious mental disorders, and they need special help but don't get it.
A man I bunked next to clearly needed medication to calm him
down. I called mental health people, homeless agencies. Two
weeks later he was out walking the streets early in the morning
and was run over and crushed by a garbage truck.
In larger cities I'm sure there are too many people needing
help. But smaller city shelters are run by losers. And they run
them like it is their own private party. They don't help people.
They hassle them.

Now you are seeing, at a younger age, i'de geuss, what some people do to those who end up less fortunate. Lazurus and the begger. Somrthing should really be done about that kind of mercyless behavior, but the perpetrators believe that everyone who can or will say something has no power, and so can be ignored. don't ever become like these people.. What profitith a man, should he gain the whole world,, and lose his own....

Usually we don't want any people to be homeless. But our world administration is still too inefficient in providing warm shelters for all men and women and especially the children. Each individual among us should try his best to solve this problem.
But voluntary homelessness also has very great values that Buddha, Christ, the Bab...chose to enjoy this condition.

I guess before moving them they should have presented them with alternative shelter .. they are part of the population right?!!
well I guess this is the duty of the city and they have to do something about it .. no matter who those people are .. at the end if they feel neglected and frustrated then you should watch out for an increase in the rate of crime .. one thing leads to another

You know when you are homeless, you wont have to worry about tax, rent and other bills, you only have to worry about how to eat and that means a homeless person have something to worry about. But that does not mean that people should treat them badly, instead people should try to help them.

It is sad, in this age where we are spending millions of dollars on sending satellites to the mars etc, our brothers here on earth don't have decent living conditons. Surely our priorities are haywire. I don't buy the theory that it will benefit us in the next 100 years, what about the present and what about the basics?
