Changing your home page in Internet Explorer is done by clicking on "Tools" then " Internet Options" at the top of the browser. However you will need to log in and keep going back to refresh your inbox. What you may want is some form of Messenger tool.

If you are using Yahoo mail then I can recommend Yahoo Messenger, which I have happily used for many years. Other products include MSN Messenger for Hotmail, which should have similar functionality. Outlook used to have an alert system which set off an audible and/or visual warning that new mail had arrived.

Yahoo Messenger is a relatively small application which you download free and set up with your YahooID and password. While you are online it is in constant touch with the Yahoo server and when new mail is received it gives an audible alarm (which can be switched off or reconfigured) and pops up a tiny but readable one-line window in the bottom right of your screen, telling you who the new message is from and the message title. You can ignore low priority messages or go straight into important ones. This allows you to be working in any application or playing a game, and still receive alerts. (As long as you are online and messenger is active)

When you go online initially it will pop-up an alert to tell you if you have any new messages. Clicking on the alert signs you straight into your Yahoo mailbox. If you leave your computer and miss alerts, an icon in the system tray (bottom right of screen) shows you if you have new mail. Hovering on it tells you how many messages. By clicking on this you can also sign straight in to Yahoo mail. I just leave a browser open all the time with my mailbox open and go back into it when I need to.

I spend all day online and Yahoo mail is my only email service. I have three domains with personal addresses, all of which deliver to the one mailbox. This includes my business adresses. I do not use PC based email for a number of reasons, not the least of which is virus control. I have broadband and spend all day connected, sending and receiving emails. When my wife signs onto the computer using her ID, Messenger automatically recognises her as a separate user and polls her Yahoo mail for her!

The Messenger works in pretty much real time: the delay in notification is seconds, if that. You will have to tell your firewall to let it talk to the internet -a good firewall will prompt you when Messenger first tries to poll the server. As with many Yahoo services, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Try it!

You can not do this by setting the home page to Yahoo! Mail. It’s not possible as far as I know. But you have a few alternatives as follows.

- Install Yahoo Messenger
This will display a mess sage in the bottom-right corner of the desktop as soon as you get a mail

- Install Yahoo Widgets
This is same like Yahoo! Messenger. But you are going to love this!

- Install Yahoo! tool bar
This will display a button with number of new mails arrived to your mail box

All e-mail service provider do not provide that service.
In Gmail, install GMail-Notifier or/and Google Talk.
In Yahoo, install yahoo messanger.
They will tell if you have got new mail.

It is not possible to know from the browser to notify that you have new mail.

You need a program that continually monitors email - or you can just leave Outlook Express running all the time.

But if you want to do this without Outlook try some of these...
