Years ago the banks did a so called stock take. The bank would close and a government audit would be done. It then became knowledge that when ever a holiday was held It was called a bank holiday.

Ever tried to see the bank manager on a Bank holiday ? You won't be able to because banks are shut on Bank holidays. No doubt someone else will know when this all started.

Because it is the day the banks are closed. So it is as if it is a Sunday, shops are only allowed to be open for 6 hours and the traffic is real bad.

Because you can BANK on one coming along every 2 or 3 weeks.
They can afford to close so often due to the profits they make with their charges.
