I personaly think its incredibly pretentious for Americans to call themselves 'World Champions' when they come to the end of an ordinary domestic sports season.I know baseball has the 'World Series' and gridiron has the 'Super Bowl' (after a southerners inability to say 'ball') but when its all over they are pronounced 'WORLD CHAMPIONS!!'by an adoring but prodominantly american press.Australia have their own domestic rules football league but when its all over they dont go on holiday as world champions, they are national champions. So what makes America the exception to the rule?

Americans, like Australians, live very insular lives and most of them have no idea that there is a world outside of their own. It is a huge country and sorry to say, the news is filtered and pasteurised to such an extent that most Americans manage to live their entire lives in a vacuum. Don't be too hard on Americans, they work too hard and get very little holiday so they never their leave their home towns, states or country.

Cooperstownking is just typical of the mentality of the poeple that I'm sure this question is directed at.

It also really appalled me when I saw Superman II, (I was about 12 at the time), and the President of the United States was representative of the the Leader of the World.

Regarding the World Series though, no other country takes the sport seriously enough and the Americans are the best in the world, ergo, the best team in the US is the best team in the world. Same as basketball really too. There are international teams but the Americans are by far the best at it which is why Amercians were forbidden from letting they're best players into the Olympics for so long.

But I do get where you're coming from.

Ha well I don't know much about that being generally uninterested in sport and generally ignorant but that sounds like America all over - The Greatest Nation in the World!! Well probably the richest. There is something to be said for their pompousness however and that is they believe in themselves and they Love their country and that's not a bad thing at all.

...self-imaging hyperbole. If the U.S. citizens had engaged in more world travel, learned two or three more languages (like most people in the world,) learned the metric system, and took a greater interest in world affairs (besides their lame war) we might have seen a more poised and distinguished people. Instead, we see a people who make a piece of apple pie into the whole pie...while the rest of the world idly stands by and observes the deep denial politely...ehem...

I don't know what your issue is with the Americans, but I will say that whether a team is called the world champions or not is largely unimportant. There are too many important issues to deal with to get wrapped around the axle about a name.

The word pretentious is in dictionarys world wide. It is not meant to be taken seriously when used in the capacity you mention, like worlds best coffee, is it really? NO Because it is an inflatory comment meant to incite excitement and interest.

*sigh * Didn't you KNOWWWWWW??? Americans are the best at everything? DUH!! We brought the ball, so we get to make the rules and decide who wins. And if we don't like the game we can take our balls and go home! Wah!! * sniffle!*
Don't give it another thought. America thinks that they are the ONLY ones in the game. One day you guys'll whip our buttts and I'll cheer you on!! Bring on 'cobber! I'm rootin' for ya!!

It is not pretentiousness, it is because America IS better than the rest of the World. We are number 1 and you all know it. The rest of the world has soccer to watch. Don't get me wrong, soccer is good exercise and is a fun pastime. Soccer is NOT a real sport. It is something for European bastards to look down their noses with.

America is the best of the best. The rest of the World wants to be us......We are number 1. We are the top spot. Why shouldn't we be proud of ourselves?

Because they would like to rule the world but know they can't.

first:didn't know there was a
"rule" however it's really just a matter of pride
"in the land of the blind, the man with one eye is king"
meaning statisticly we may not be the world champions but we as a country feel we are superior to most other for one reason...
we are!!
