I mean...all the contestants come from EARTH... and there are no ALIENS to compete with in the miss universe competition...so wat gives?

It is all about the organizers. Miss Universe is owned by Donald Trump (an American) while Miss World is owned by the British. You also have Miss Earth, owned by who knows, Miss International, etc. Actually, Miss World existed first. Then, the Americans wanted to upstage the British. So they came up with the name "Miss Universe". But it is all the same. Just different organizers, therefore different brands.
An analogy: it similar to those world champion belts in boxing given out by different boxing organizations like WBC, WBO, IBF, WBA, etc. That is why you have several boxing champions. It sounds confusing but it is all business.
Heck, you could also set-up your own organization and have a Miss Galaxy or Miss Solar-System, or Miss whatever.

One is just called Miss World and the other is called Miss Universe. It is like the Miss USA and Miss America pageants. They are competitors with one another.

miss universe holds a bigger position than miss world. miss universe gets more privilages.

this year miss world is held in Poland, and miss universe is always in USA (i think) this are two different 'organization' they like Coke and Pepsi;)
