Technically yes, but there are extremist Hindu uprisings abound. One group humiliated two wives of Christian pastors by stripping them naked and beating them. There are other examples, too but I'm not gonna go into specifics.

While India is legally and constitutionally a "secular" country and while most religions can live there in peace, there are some very concentrated efforts to destabilize this. There is the heavy involvement of radical Hindu elements in politics which constantly pressure governments to place Hinduism above all else. There are radical Muslim groups which seek to forment trouble and violence. There are the ever-present attacks against Christianity by both Muslim and Hindu extremists. And there is the current Hindu campaign to destroy and absorb the Sikh faith.

Although in some ways India has been a model of religious harmony (when compared to others) she really needs to take care that the government and her people remain as "tolerant" as possible as she seems to keep drifting away from the concept........

Yes, I lived there for 1 year and was amazed with its secularity. Muslims can marry 4 women.... i.e. can practice their religions the way they think they should (I do not agree with marrying 4 women... 1 is more than enough). You can eat cow meat although Hinduism forbids it. Churches, Hindu temples, mosques are next to each others without any tension between them. Both western and eastern world have a lot to learn from India. India is truly secular and I don't know if any other country comes close... maybe the States.

Secular... yeah why not? According to law, anyone is allowed to practice any religion he/she wants to. And most of the areas in India live in harmony. As far as I know, NO Indian wants to curb the right of others. Its just some antisocial elements that bring up quarrels and riots. Ignoring those parts, most of India is secular and harmonious.
