Colloid means "glue + oid" and is a mixture of finely divided particles within a media. Gelatin is a good example of a gel and because the particles have electric charges they stick together just like glue. The bonds are often very weak and can be bloken (melted) by adding heat.

a suspended colloidal solution is forced. If left alone, will break. Such as asphalt slurry, which is asphalt and water forced together, and breaks very easily and quickly. Course, I'm no chemist.

From what I remember, "colloids" were things like clouds. Do a quick Google search, and I am sure you will find a better, more defintive answer.
