I agree that Cannavaro deserved the Golden Ball... He was brilliant and consistent throughout the entire tournament and lead the champions to perfection!!! Zidane played well despite his lapse in better judgement -- I'm not attacking him I'm just saying that a player of his calibre should have been the bigger man and walk away, headbutting Materazzi isn't really worth the effort -- but I think Cannavaro was just that little bit better!!!

Zidane was by and large more impressive than Cannavaro(with all due respect to both). Zidane single handedly(well almost)took an ageing french team to the finals where tey lost a close match. I also guess there might be a little sentimence into it too. You zizou is retiring and all. But he really and truly deserved the golden ball. I dont hate Cannavaro at all, in fact i think he is a great footballer but i do really think that Zidane deserved it more. Plz do not count the head butting incident.

Cannavaro was consistent and defended very well. It could be agreed that it was his defensive abilities that resulted in Italy winning the tournament. But Zidane played very well, if we want to be honest. His performance against Brazil was the best display by an individual. No one played better than that throughout the tournament. Of cause there were some games especdially ii the group stages were he seemed to have been struggling with his game but towards the end, he was just getting better and better. I want to believe his deserved it. Forget his headbutt. Zidane did well on the field of play.

As someone said, they pick the winner before the final. I agree that Cannavaro should have won the Golden Ball, definately!

Funny enough, I answered at the questions:
"Do you also think that Cannavaro deserved to win the Golden Ball more than Zidane?" after the final and before award went to Zidane. I was wrong, but I haven't changed my opinion:
True.
Zidane waste every chance head-butting Materazzi.
If two players only would have played this WC and the second was my aunt Amelia, she would win easily.
I'm disappointed with fans words. I'm Italian and Juventus fan, and have spent my usual words to Zidane in this Y-answer. I called him every time as a GREAT player, and I perfectly remember Hamburger SV - Juventus 3-1, Champions League, 24 October 2000 (headbutt and red card...). To me he remains the same GREAT player I know. Losing his head in few match isn't such a shame to diminish a GREAT player who has his name in football history to a normal player, but this cancels every chance he had to win the golden ball. It seems so clear.
Cannavaro was my favorite before the final, now there are no doubt at all.
I can't explain, I totally disagree.
Awarding Zidane they need to enforce Materazzi banning too. So they had 3 and 2 match ban respectively, and this is an unbalanced judgment, adding mistake to mistake.
********edit @touzours
'Sentimi, ragazzo' (lol):
IF THE RULES FOR GETTING THE GOLDEN BALL WERE, ONE MUST HEAD-BUTT MATERAZZI IN THE CHEST BECAUSE HE ISN'T TALL ENOUGH TO HIT HIS FACE, THEN, ZIDANE WOULD HAVE A BIG FAT GOLDEN BALL IN HIS LIVING ROOM RIGHT NOW..
BUT... WERE THESE THE RULES?

I'll try to explain: The reason the Zizou was given the Golden Ball Award was because he basically got France into the World Cup Final once they entered the elimination round. I will agree the Fabio had a pretty good tournament, but Zizou was really the main reason the France made it to the final, what with his penalty kicks and other types of goals. And, in case you didn't know, the Golden Ball Award is voted on at halftime of the final, so they didn't factor in anything in the second half...

Of course I believe that Cannavaro should have gotten the award. I know it was voted upon before the final game however, Zidane's behaviour in the final should have revoked that decision. It sets a dangerous presedence. There is no doubt that he is a great player but what are we telling kids? It 's okay to lash out if you are a great player? You'll be rewarded anyway?
Just my opinion.

No. The Italians worked as a team to win the World Cup while Zidane was leading the rest of his team around, one could say--although it kills me to, frankly--that he was even PERSONALLY responsible for their appearance at the Finals. And at the very least, he boosted their morale. Lillian Thuram said it himself (remarked it to the staff) during the break-time before the second half of extra time in the Finals.
No matter how you feel about the head-butt, his lousy temper and his HUGE ego, he was a great player, and if you're only talking technically (and not morally), he deserved the Golden Ball.
