Hi,,, I would say that 2 days is pretty good enough time to see most things there,,,, if you do not stay out all night....lol
When you arrive at the train station, go out the front ,,, straight across the street , toward the left.. there are a group of buildings over that way,,, go to the last white building, and go inside,, they are the Tourist Help,, and will find you a hotel to your price wishes for free,,,,,
Check out the Van Gough Museum, the Reichs Museum,, the Rembrant House Museum and the Anne Frank house,,, also the Heinikan brewery and the gardens are nice,,,,,
Along with the usual reason that people go ,,, the smoke shops,,,, and don't buy the street stuff,,,,
Good luck and have fun....

Two days is enough if you only want to see the real highlights. But I'd say you'd be more relaxes if you'd stay a day longer.
Cheap budget: the former youth hostel organisation. They are not only for youngsters anymore. They have three hostels in AMS. They also have a lot of double bedrooms. Excellent way to meet other people. About $20 per person
visit www.stayokay.nl. They have English version of the web site.

I don't think 2 nights is enough for anywhere, especially Amsterdam. (Unless you are going just to get stoned off your ***, then...haha...it should be enough) I stayed at The Flying Pig, downtown hostel. It is clean, cheap, right off the Dam Square, full of travelers, and it even has "The Happy Room". Highly recommended, but only if you like that kind of world party atmosphere.

No way, you need at least four days to see Amsterdam. There is lots to do, more than just the usual tourist attractions.
