Each plane needs a certain speed to take off safely, which depends upon its weight, projected area and design. For a plane to reach its take off speed it needs to run with full power for certain distance depending upon its acceleration. , this distance length plus factor of safety is the runway length for this type of planes.

the airplane was to big for the runway. bigger planes need more distance to reach speeds acceptable to takeoff.
