This often happens when you have other programs running. Quit all the programs you have running, and leave your computer alone while it defrags. If this doesn't work, try rebooting in safe mode and run defrag then.

You have a task running that is reading and writing from your hard drive at the same time that the Defrag is trying to Defrag your drive. This was a bug in Windows 98. You need to shut down all extra tasks.

The two biggests tasks that cause this are the internet and virus scanners. Turn those items off and you might get by with no problems.

Sometimes you can lose your FAT (File Allocation Table). This will cause your defrag to start over from 1% repeatedly. You can sometimes repair your FAT if you have your original disks that came with your system. But in most cases, it requires reformat of your drive and a re-install of your system (sorry).

What's wierd about the FAT in Windows 98 is that you can lose it and your computer will still run, but things won't quite work right and you'll get some tasks shutting down. You can actually still backup important data like document, pictures and such before you have to re-install your system. Good luck!

Probably not....Win98 had a problem running Defrag because it continually monitors the hard drive for changes and if it detects any change, it restarts the Defrag process.

So basically, it is continually restarting the Defrag over and over again but never completing it.

Run Dr. Watson (part of Win98) and see if there is a "process" running called mmtask.exe.

This file is "supposed" to help with multitasking (running more than one prog at once) but Win98 will run perfectly without it and getting rid of this file will usually fix the Defrag problem.

To do this you will need to locate the file "mmtask.exe" and then reboot (or shutdown) the machine to a C:\ prompt.

Once you are at the c:\ prompt you can go to the directory with that file in it and rename it to something like "mmtask.bak"

This way you aren't actually deleting the file, but Win will not be able to load it anymore at boot time - which is good.

IF you can't understand everything I have written above - DONT TRY IT because playing around at the prompt when you dont know what you're doing could be dangerous.

If that is the case, show this to someone else who understands DOS commands and get them to do it.

Hope this helps.

How long did you wait for it...sometimes mine sits at 1 percent for like 10 minutes then goes on......if you have to wait alot longer than that you need to get it repair cause I had a friend whos compy did that and it just needed serious repair...try to find an optimizer which is like a defrager and see how that works first.

Try to run scan disk before you run the "Disk Defragmenter". However, make sure you have checked in the box saying "Automatically fix error".

GOOD LUCK!!
