Did someone say it is a stupid question? I beg to differ though, because I have been asking this question too but never got an answer.
They may not have a life, so they need to gossip? It does not sound credible to me.
It seems like just their nature to gossip so as to maintain their self-worth and sense of superiority. I would like to feel they are greatly insecure themselves, hence the need to feel power through downplaying other people by gossiping about them.
But then, nobody would really know why unless we ask a person who is indeed gossipy. If we do that, one - the person is not likely to answer you truthfully, and two -he/she may start gossiping about you for asking him/her that kind of question, blowing the issue out of proportion.
Guess we just have to live with such people - who would in turn contrast people like some of us, showing how civilised and dignified by not involving ourselves in bitching and gossiping.

Coz when they gossip, they don't realise that their action's making them look bitchy? But from their own perception, they don't realise that their gossiping is doing anyone any harm, so they simply go on with it. Besides, to some people, being bitchy is cool. So they simply act that way to give people the impression that they are 'not geeky'.

it's an old tradition before powerfull states and laws. people wich has old fashioned mentality still gossiping. they are living at middle age

It is because of the societal influence and idle situations most ppl found themselves. Traditional most women in african region copy directly from thier mother, and that most of them are/were full time house wife/wives.

Because the perception is that nice people who have nothing to say are soooo boring.

Because they like it!! Stupid question... Why do people eat? Why do people gossip? Why do people sleep? BECAUSE THEY WANT/HAVE TO DO THAT!!!!
