I always liked The Thrill Is Gone, which is a standard blues progression, except for the run-down at the end. This descending chromatic chord progression has been used in a lot of big songs, including Chicago's most popular 25 or Six to Four.

Am
The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away
Dm
The thrill is gone baby
The thrill is gone away
Em
You know you done me wrong baby
C B Bb Am
And you'll be sorry someday

25 or Six to Four

Am G F# F E

G, Em, A, D7. neither dark nor speedy but it was use by hundreds of artists in the 50s so it must have some appeal!
