Walking out defeats the SALE not the SALESMAN, or in my case salesMAM.
I've been selling for 23 years & although the 'walk out technique' may have been used 15-10 years ago, it doesn't work now-a-days. At least not at most dealerships.

At my dealership, when a customer walks out, nobody ever chases after them. No need to ..they already have the best price , in writing, in their hands.
And, more often than not,...THEY come back to buy, after they've shopped around.
Unfortunatly........sometimes the vehicle they wanted to buy, was bought by somebody else who wasn't trying to play games & actually came to the dealership to get a good deal

Defeat a salesman? That's funny - I mean, if you go to a car dealership, supposedly you are shopping for a car, and intend on purchasing or leasing one in the near future, right? So defeating the person who might sell you one......I'm sorry the wording just made me laugh. But, I know exactly what you mean.
Car salesmen are about the most annoying, pushy types you can run across.

Yes, I think that (obviously) the cars are priced at a very high markup from what the dealer bought them for. So, they put a riduclous price on the window, expecting you to make an offer. Of course, they will then make a counter offer - somewhere in between what the sticker price is and what you offered. Well, I think that you have to look and act like you are very serious about purchasing a car, and at least give the impression that you have the money to do so. Act very confident with yourself and not seem to be intimidated by the salesman.

Then, if he/she makes that middle of the road counter offer, you should say that that is unacceptable, that there are plenty of cars for sale, thank them for their time and leave. More than likely, the salesman will try to stop you, will try to tell you that that car has had several people looking seriously at it, it will be surely gone by the end of the day - you know, something like that, trying to get you worried that if you leave, the car will be gone. And it's probably not true anyway. Just stick to your guns, be very cool (even if you do want the car really, really bad, but just can't afford to pay any more than what you offered), and act as if that's fine, if someone wants to pay their price for it, then they probably deserve it.

If you have like a business card, maybe you might want to hand it to the salesman as you are leaving the lot, mentioning that if they change their mind on price, to give you a call, and tell them that if you are still in the market then, you might consider a second look.

Those guys - all they want to do is make their commission and go home. More than likely if you don't appear intimidated, or too eager, they will come down more than they say they will.

Good luck!

False. It's better to say, "Well, that's more than I want to spend, but thank you for your help." If there is room for negotiation, the salesman will ask you what's the most you could spend. At this point tell him that you're only looking today to get a feel for how much a car costs. If he doesn't give you another offer, but keeps on asking you for an offer, ask for a ridiculously low price like half of what he's asking. Keep asking him for his best price since you're just looking today no matter how urgently you want to buy a car on the spot. Be prepared for a long process and a lot of waiting. Just remind yourself that you're saving a lot of money.

That's a good way to get them to offer you a better deal. Any good car salesman would come runnning out and offer you a better deal in order to get you to purchase a vehicle.

What would be the point of doing that. You would just take up less of he/she time so they could sell to another. Also anyone that has been a sales person very long would not even bother to think about you again.
