There really wasn't a lot going on with the band until Freddy Mercury was added to the line-up. That doesn't detract from their great musicianship, but they needed a strong front man to properly convey their unique style to the general public. There was a good bit of resistance to Freddy from the band at first, but lucky for all of us, they got together and produced some of the finest recordings in rock n' roll history.
Freddy was of Indian and Persian descent, and born as Farrokh Bulsara. Not a particularly attractive lad, he struggled to conform to British culture; and developed a bombastic style that included his childhood Indian music influence, as well as heros like Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Liza Minnelli.
Freddy became an historical figure from incredible musical accomplishments that won the respect of his peers, as well as millions of fans. His bout with AIDS and subsequent death seemed to unify the music community that may have been ambivalent towards the issue prior to his passing. It is interesting to note that the popularity of Queen and their music continues to grow, a testimony to the lasting impact of their ground-breaking body of work.
