All part of the marketing machine that is MTV. It still has a huge viewer base but, as you can probably tell from the VMA guests, they appear to be centered around 16 yr girls.

But, of course, that can't be right, because MTV gets away with it's Spring Break and hook-up shows because it's directed at 18-24 yr olds, not kids...hmmm.
