why do so many mothers feed their children up on calpol to make em sleep, im fed up to the back teeth hearing mothers sayin "js give em calpol that will knock em out" im only 22 had my baby 10weeks ago and the thought of feeding her up on calpol turns my stomach, shes a baby of course she gonna cry, its pack and parcel of having a child. does anyone else agree with me here?

It shocks me how many people say calpol is the answer. My mother in law thinks its needed all the time so when my son goes to stay I make sure it isn't in the bag!
My boy is 10 months old and has had it on 8 seperate occasions tops. Once when he was 10 weeks he had bronchilitis and it was needed to bring his temp down. The other times are when we have KNOWN something is wrong, like teething and another couple of mild fevers.
I hate hearing of people medicating children 'just in case' with calpol and others meds. Its lazy parenting.
Well done, you have a good attitude!
(I'm only 22 too, maybe us young ones are more tuned into our kids!)

I don't know anyone who gives their baby calpol simply to put them to sleep. You're right its a stupid idea. However...we didn't start to use it before he was 3 or 4 months old and dribbling like niagra falls and screaming his little head off. Teething. That's when you start to get into Calpol - and particularly the Calpol teething gel. I never thought I would use it so often but natures played us a cruel trick with those teeth ripping up through sensitive gums. Apart from that, its cuddles not calpol our little ones need.

I agree.... I have used calpol twice with my 5 month old daughter...both times when she had a high temp after jabs.... I don't think that you should give it willy nilly for the sake of a quiet life.... if I did my daughter would be going through whole bottles of the stuff... what happens to these calpol fed babies when they are actually poorly? Does the calpol still work to alleviate pain? Also an adult taking paracetamol constantly actually get withdrawal headaches/pain on stopping regular consumption..

Calpol is a reliever not only for fever. If you think your child is fretting becuase in pain or uncofortable, calpol can help ease it.
You're right you cannot use it for no reason but it is better then having a baby cry because of a pain you cannot understand

I most definately agree with you, Calpol contains paracetamol which is a drug for pain relief or to reduce a fever NOT a drug to be used just to make a baby sleep.A baby must be feeling happy and relaxed enough to fall asleep by themselves not with the assistance from drugs.Calprofen is also a drug used for the same reasons as Calpol but it contains ibuprofen instead of paracetamol.
I am a childrens/neonatal nurse.

I actually know somebody who as a party trick says to his kids 'what do you get if ou won't sleep?' and they happily shout 'Calpol!!' I personally think that it is disgusting. I use calpol on my 6 month old son for teething, fever and when he has his jabs, and every time I give it to him I feel guilty as hell! I know it's helping him, but I still feel bad. But like my husband says, 'what's the first thing you do if you have a headache or are in pain?' it's true I grab the ibuprofen. So it sort of makes me feel better.

Lots of people do this and it drives me insane too!!
Some people can't be bothered to get to the root of the problem, they think that Calpol is an easy answer to get the baby to sleep, but Calpol then won't work when you really need it as they will be used to it. aaarrrggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Calpol is a mothers best friend. Of course you should not give your baby medicine just to get her to sleep, but it's the best pain/fever relief out there and every mum I know could not live without Calpol.

I think u should wait until your child needs calpol b4 giving it. my boy is 9 months and he neva got calpol til he was 3 months for the simple reason he was theething, he only gets in when he is off form with the flu or teething, some chidren are colic and when they are in pain some mothers may decide to ease it an give them calpol, honestly i dont think any mother wud give there child calpol to cause them any harm. you just focus on your child and bringing them up. every mother knows there own child inside out so if they want give them calpol let them it none of your business, anyway it wont harm them, gud luck

I agree Calpol should only be used when the child is in pain or has got a fever etc.
For teething I used Herbal Teething Powder which are much better.
