It doesn't really matter if you start with a story or not. The most important thing with screenwriting is just getting the format and stage directions so that actors and directors can follow it. My biggest tip would be just to go and buy a copy of a screenplay for a movie you like (or check it out from your library) and glance through it to get the hang of the format--since this is just a light project as it were. I'd recommend "American Beauty" or "Gosford Park" as really good screenplays to check out.
Hope you cheer up your friend :)

write it in script format. but do not think of strict format first. you can write it in this way:

B enters room. sees A. B approaches A and grabs A's magazine.

B: it's not proper to read people's stuff without asking permission.

A grabs magazine from B.

A: it's not even yours

so your thoughts will not be slowed down by the duration of typing, just keep on typing. don't think of grammar or format. imagine them in your head, make a short film or skit on how it will be performed. it'll help you come up with the emotions appropriate. you may also imagine yourself as one of the characters so you can feel what the characters are going through.

after writing the script, as someone else to read it aloud. then, revise it again. :) ask for comments to help you.

get tips from plays and tv shows. or movies. :) enjoy writing!

Process ... it's a killer, babe.

Trying to get to the product is a four lane freeway with cloverleafs.

If you are serious ... my advice is to write the script and think in storyboard terms.

Scripts = dialogue, so if you can write realistic natural sounding dialogue and still be able to move the story on ... do that.

First you finish high school, then do about 4 years of university majoring in theatre arts or English lit. then, you won't need to ask this question, because you will already know.
