Okay so you are ready for a project. If you are sincere enough then go ahead with this idea:
Make a java based application that prepares an installer for any software.
The user interface shall be an XML file that takes in the parameters for a desired software and generates the installer for the same.

hello it all depends what u have specialised in till now....
if u r a java/.net guy u can make a search engine or a email server/client....
well u want to make it in c++ or some other similar language u can go for real time algorithms eg rate monotonic,etc
