I am already going to the zoo, the beaches, botanical gardens. the opera house, the rocks, the quay, the aquaruim and the bridge.
I an not into extreme sports, heights, or mountain treks. I have already done some boating and cayaking this week and want to keep dry.
Also I am going to see other parts of Australia but have them fully planned out (except for the week in Cairns which I want to play by ear so to speak). So I want only things in or very near Sydney. I am staying in Kingscross area so anything great nearby will be great.
I am planning to visit a club one night but I would like to know the best ones. I also would like some good places to eat and some good bars. I have been told the Oxford Tavern is a lot of fun - which other places are fun to have a night out in.
Are there any good live music venues (folk, rock, jazz, blues and reggae are all good for my taste) and good places to shop (not expensive labels but nice goods at moderate prices)?

I am not sure if this is still going on , because I was there 7 months ago..so it's a long shot...but I saw Russell Crowe and his band The Ordinary Fear of God play in a small venue in Sydney, was about $20 so really good value, was a great night out!

Also food places, there is an all you can eat vegetarian restaurant - gavinias or something...after your feed you get a free movie in their very comfy cinema...loads of cusions to lounge around on.....

...go to Taronga Park zoo they do a dusk walk and BBQ..weather dependant.....

Hope you have fun...

when in Cairns, i recommend a visit to the Tjabuki (sp!) centre...AMAZING! and go to WildWorld not the Croc farm! :)

Sydney...

World Bar in Kings X is a good night, if your on hols and want some fun, Sidebar (under wake up hostel) is a laugh.

If you go across the Pyrmont bridge from darling harbour (on foot or monorail), the pyrmont bridge hotel is a good pub, walk further round to the casino which is huge and fun. Just by the casino is the Fish market - excellent in the moring, some GREAT cheap food!

Manly beach is probably the best beach in sydney, walk round the corner towards shelley beach and snorkel on the aquatic reserve, then have a barbie and box of goon on shelley!

Live music is frequent in most bars/pubs try the three wise monkeys on george st and scruffy murphy's just off george st. World bar (kings x) also has live music!

Deffo do fraser island and whitsundays in queensland! Gilligans is a good night in cairns!

When I was in Sydney at Christmas we ate one night in the Bayswater Brasserie in Kings Cross - it was fantastic.

Why don't you head into the Blue mountains for the day? Or take the ferry to Manly - its lovely, and have a potter around North Sydney.

Or take a trip - about an hour and a half / 2 hours drive away is Jevis Bay - the beaches have the whitest sand in the world - it squeaks underfoot. Or maybe just head to Woollongong and have a look around.

There's loads of stuff to do!

There are lots of things to do in Sydney! Go to Darling Harbour the night life is great. It's worth seeing Harbout bridge at night, my husband and I were there in January and the bridge had heart in the middle with lit up! (The heart of city!) The opera house is amazing and deffinately worth the tour! If you can go to Blue Mountains and Koala park where you can pet koala's, wombats and kangaroos. Go with a firm called APT. Australian Pacific Touring. Really worth it spectalua views really breath taking! Enjoy yourself and don't forget to get a visa before you enter Australia and don't take any food with you on the plane because you are not allowed to take any type of food into Australia! Have Fun!

I'm not really up to date on what's hot in Sydney at the moment, but when you go to Cairns do try and take a seaplane trip if you can. It's just amazing to land on a deserted sand island and see nothing but ocean all around you. Here's a panorama fro a recent trip: http://www.360travelguide.com/idisp.asp?iCode=qld01
