Strictly counting NBA stats (not ABA), the top three rebounders are:
1) Wilt Chamberlain / 23,924
2) Bill Russell / 21,620
3) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar / 17,440
If ABA stats were also included, Moses Malone would edge ahead of Kareem for the #3 all time spot.
Chamberlain and Russell were, in fact, the two greatest rebounders of all time (both skill wise and stat wise)...
I would say that Moses Malone was a better rebounder, over the course of his career, than Jabbar was... Jabbar was a great rebounder for the first half of his career, but tailed off a lot in that department later on, although he could still rebound well when he absolutely had to.
Karl Malone retired as the #7 rebounder in combined NBA / ABA history, well behind #6 Elvin Hayes. Malone was a great rebounder, and since Utah has never had a decent center, they relied heavily upon Malone to clear the boards.
Rodman was a great, great rebounder as well... he would, of course, pad his stats by deliberately missing layups and getting his own offensive rebounds... but he was a great rebounder with or without the padding... besides, Moses Malone used to do the same thing, though Rodman took it to a new level. (Moses) Malone kind of started that trend.
Chamberlain and Russell were absolutely the two best rebounders ever... a number of players would qualify for the number 3 spot...
The Malone Boys (Karl and Moses), Nate Thurmond, Wes Unseld, Willis Reed, Jerry Lucas... Thurmond, Unseld and Reed would out-rebound Mutombo if they ever played head-to-head...
But ultimately, I would go with Chamberlain, Russell and Moses.

Dennis Rodman does NOT belong in this conversation! The other guys played basketball, instead of standing under the basket waiting for rebounds.
