Most answers are good some are funny and one at least is wrong. But but I think that is the one that shows the calculations of cups correctly. I believe it is a slip of pen.
My comments:
A,B,C,D,....... are standard cup size.
Number is chest measurement.
If you are interested in statistics eg averages then go to library or look it up on line.
Best way to remember is "C" for cup.
PS:
36C/ 34D are considered intermediate sizes fits both type of female. It means that the bra will fit a woman of 36 in chest with "C" cup and will also fit a woman with 34 in chest and "D" cup, this is because "C" cup is smaller then "D" cup and it is able to compensate for 2 ins of chest measurement.
Large chest with small cup or small chest with large cup.
But you cannot have 36D/ 34C, because 36D will be too loose on 34C and woman can get back pain without proper support. The other way it will be too tight and a woman may not be able to breath properly and can actually faint in a very rear case.
The main purpose of the bra is to support the breast and prevent back pain.
This is done by two methods.
1. Stretchable fabrics.
2. Cut compensation by designer.
3. The elastic ban in the back and strong shoulder straps also plays a roll.

Hi, in breast size..the alphabet stands for the cup size, in short the size of your breast.... which means if u are a size 36.. u could have an A cup or B cup..etc. the number is the size round about the breast..like when u take a chest size for fittings of clothes.
u could be big on number yet have a small cup size and vice versa.

im a guy and i know this...the number is around the chest, not the breasts, and the letter is the cup size which is the measurment around the furthest point from the chest, the nipples...after subtracting the number/band size..
a=1in diff
b=2in diff
c=3in diff
d=4in diff.
