Offense is the best Defence. This phrase comes from the famous book 'Art of War' by Sun Tzu. It means that when you take an offensive initiative, you foce your opponent to defend, distracting him from attacking you (he has to organize his defense lines, design his defense strategy, etc.).

Defence is spelled incorrectly. The correct spelling is defense. The ending is the same as offense. Both proverbs are correct but the one that is used more commonly is defense is the best offense. In the classic sense it means that if you are prepared for battle then you have a much better chance ot winning that battle. When you are offending something, you are attacking it and you have the best chance of doing that if you take some precautions first to protect yourself from being offended against. Usually in a game, you will hear the crowd calling "DEFENSE, DEFENSE" because they know that is the best way of winning the game.

The Best Defense is a Good Offense. This is the old saying.
It is not unusual to say "A strong offense is the best defense" or some other approximate phrasing.
If your Sports team is aggressive at going after goals, runs, points, whatever, there is lessened need for defense. If you can keep your offensive players scoring, the other team will have a hard time keeping up.

Defense is the best offense is an American football axiom meaning that if you beat the pus out of the opposing team while they have the ball, you'll eventually cause the other team to drop it. You pick it up and run in for a touchdown.

These are American spellings...not British.

The best defense is a good offense. This is a quote by Napoleon. No, not Napoleon Dynamite. Napoleon Bonaparte. It means what it sounds like it means. To have a good offense is better than any defense you might come up with. Instead of sitting around waiting for the other side to attack you, attack them.

defense is the best offense: Because you need to protect yourself in order to prevail. If you go all balls to the wall 100% of time there is too much risk involed to be a good defense.
