Other than the popular answer of Ultrasound, there is also the ability to hear a fetal heartbeat after the first trimester. (12 weeks) A "Doppler" stethoscope is used to hear the placenta and heartbeat of your baby. Male and female babies tend to have different speeds to their heartbeats.

Ultrasound is a great, non-invasive way to "see" the baby before it is born. Approximate gestational age based on length of bones and developing structures in the fetus can be determined and sometimes, if the baby is positioned just right, the determination of gender is able to be made. Structural malformities and the presence of more than one child can be seen at times as well.

Amniocentesis is the drawing of fluid from the amniotic sac that the babies float in, inside the womb, through a needle, to be tested for chromosomal abnormalities that are not able to be "seen" on an ultrasound such as Down's Syndrome. Also, it gives a definite answer on gender. Usually, it is done on women over 35 or those who have a higher risk for abnormalities in their pregnancies. It doesn't hurt and there's minimal risk.

Using ultrasound, a tech can sometimes see the penis, or absence of same, which allows one to have a pretty good guess at the sex of the baby. Amniocentisis (taking a sample of the amniotic sac fluid) can give a DNA sample that is more conclusive.

It's "womb" not "whoomb" by the way, and womb is another name for the organ called the UTERUS where the baby grows.

Often an ultrasound can show if the baby is a girl or boy.
I only had them with 2 of my kids. They couldn't tell for sure with my daughter, but with my son you could definitely see he is a boy. I still have the pictures.
Sometimes they can also tell by how fast the baby's heart is beating.
