First of all I don't agree entirely with your question! You said men don't. However some men do carry bags. I carry a waist bag also called a fanny pack. I tried carrying a Mail man's pouch but too much ridicule some jerks that it to be a purse. Men have stuff the things they need in small containers like a waist bag.
A Wallet is only ment for money and pictures.
What do men carry in their fanny bags? Hand razor.. mini mirror, bandaids, a mini gun maybe! locks to house & shed, Locks for transportation vehicle bike, car! That's what I carry in mine! Can't fit those things into a wallet can you? Because I can't carry a purse with me without ridicule I often carrying a shopping bag and people think I'm going to do some shopping or to the flea market sometimes that is exactly where I go! Being teased for carrying a bag is one reason to Hate being a Male! There are other reasons but they don't apply to the question here!

Men used to carry purses too. Sewing pockets into clothes isn't the easiest thing and they were unreliable. This changed in Victorian England. The first 'purses' were aprons that women wore. When you grab the ends of it, it makes a pretty big carrying container for fruits, nuts, berries, children.

I'm afraid I must challenge you on this one.. ain't you ever seen pictures of David Crocket or other american hunters (what to speak of the Native Americans), being male and carrying bags when on hunting??? I'd rather attribute the difference in that men in western societies are not supposed to pay serious attention to their appearance (other than the basics), whereas women are constantly instructed to be always in impeccable shape, down to their lipstick contour, which makes it necessary for them to carry along with them their beauty equipment .. nevertheless I find it increasingly necessary for myself to carry a small purse where I keep my various sets of keys, saline solution for my contact lenses, my wallet, sunglasses, mobile, chewing gum, driver's license etc. I really do not think it is convenient for me or anyone else to stuff our pockets with it..

I don't agree with your theory, men use different types of bags to gather their stuff in and carry around, open your eyes and you will see, and now-a- days; not all women carry hang bags.

oh but you've already given the answer.... and quite good in such theory. however, men these days, do carry bric-a-brac in their suitcases too... it's just that it's been seen as society culture that a purse is identified to a woman... also, they have to keep their pads in something, right? (for hygienic purposes)

Not a bad theory. Mine is that, until the mid '60s, women wore dresses, always, which meant no pockets. A purse was simply what they had to have to tote their junk in.

i think women need more personal things to carry which men don't need to carry. and there are more cosmetic's use by women which they cant pick in their pockets. so they used purses.
