First of all don't ever pop pimples because it will spread bacteria and lead to more plus can leave scars. If they have a whitehead then apply a hot (not scalding) cloth (after a shower is a good time) until it drains itself out. Pure tea tree oil is a great spot treatment. Not to be used all over the face as it can be irritating and is quite drying. And I've noticed if I used it too often (more than 3 or 4 days) it can give me a headache.
Soap (pure) is actually one of the worst things you can wash your face with because it strips away your essential skin oils (yes you need some!) Plus chemical products can make you break out (so u break out, buy a chemical acne face wash, and keep breaking out, thus having a never ending cycle). My fave face soaps are Dr. Bronners (http://drbronner.com/index.html) They are mild and PH balanced with natural organic ingredients. I use their Baby Mild liquid soap and it's great for my sensitive skin. Plus they will keep you clear of body acne if you use them as a body wash. Aubrey Organic and Jason are good brands too. All of these you should be able to find in a health food store. Believe me, the best thing you can do for your skin (especially right now) is to STAY AWAY from chemicals.

As you age, your body changes and develops. I just turned 22 adnd was diagnosed with Rosacea. This will happen your whole life, your body will change and it will like certain things you do and don't do.
To be honest, chocolate and greasy foods have nothing to do with acne. Most of the time this is said because women and teens get cravings for these food around their period when their body is getting ready for their cycle and people automatically assume that one is connected to the other. They're not. If anything the greasy foods might be a factor it while you're eating potatoe chips you keep touching your face and you don't wash it off right away. That way the bacteria will sink in and you will get pimples.
But anyway, as I said, your body changes and the way general things in life happen to you can affect you physically as well as emotionally too. Meaning if you're overstressed right now, which can also affect your sleepping habits, this will too affect your skin condition. Many people who are overstressed are prone to breakouts more often and more severe than others. You're 17 so your probably thinking about colleges, SATs, boyfriends/girlfriends, and your senior year in general. This is a tough time for you and things may only get worse when it comes to stress. Make sure you're talking to your parents about not sleeping well and the stress you are going through right now. There might be more to what's going on and you may need to go see your regular Doctor, but your case sounds pretty general.
I don't want you to lose hope though. As for home remedies, there are none as far as I know. Just a little concealer here or there. I know that some companies make acne reducers such as Johnson & Johnson Clean and Clear line although I don't know how well they work.
You may want to look into getting a gentle facial cleanser. Nothing too major or too expensive. Since this is your first real breakout you don't want to go to the extreme. Probably look into buying a cleanser for sensitive skin, since you're used to soap and water, this will be like a step up. And if you really want to get in there, look for a gentle poor scrub that you can do once or twice a week.
Good Luck hun and don't be too worried!

It could be genetic. Does your mother or any aunts have acne break outs in the same areas as you? I get cystic acne bumps on my face that never come to a head, like a pimple, but essentially hurt like the devil, and eventually go away. Sometimes they leave a scar and some times they don't.
You may want to try a facial cleanser with salicylic acid in it. I also did not wear make up or use many face cleansing products when I was your age but found that using a product with salicylic acid to clean my face along with oil free moisturize afterwords really helped. And if you don't like the feel of foundation, you should try tinted moisturizer. Merle Norman has a great one you should try....Don't fret, I'm sure you're beautiful!

puberty :)
try not to stress too much about it, that will make the outbreak worse. in the meantime, take plenty of fluids, always wash your face, never pop and touch the acne, eat plenty of vegetables and fruits :)
