Charles Dickens. Looked at the seamier side of Victorian life. Minute descriptions are rather long!

Here's a list of authors for you:
For the Victorian gothic, try the Bronte's (Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre) or late Victorian, Stoker's Dracula.
For every day kind of stuff- any of Dickens is good. Just finished Bleak House again. Enjoyed it very much. But if you haven't read him before, you might want to start with something smaller- Oliver Twist or maybe Christmas Caroll or even Hard Times.
Elizabeth Gaskell is good too- try North and South or Mary Barton.
Victorian sci fi- Frankenstein is good. Mary Shelley.

Charles Dickens has to be the all time classical writer for this period and Victorian London
Catherine Cookson, romance and probably a bit more frothy and less factual details, as the romance is the main ingredient.
Sherlock Holmes novels set in this period as well.
Check out your local library they will be more than willing to point you in the direction of the Historical section
happy reading

The French Lieutenant's Woman, by John Fowles, is excellent. A Victorian era romance told by a modern era narrator.

If you like mystery novels, try Anne Perry. She uses Victorian England as a setting, and you get a marvellous view of what life was like for the different social classes.

Here's a YA title set in Victorian England (1890s) it is A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY by Libba Bray. It is a great title if you like historical fantasy. There's a sequel as well, but the title doesn't come to mind at the moment since I haven't read it yet. But the author is great.

Any book by Charles Dickens is definitely a recommandation and you can also try some books by the Bronte sisters. Most of their books are really grate. Wuthering Heights is my personal favorite.
