Ancient Greeks and Romans basically had homosexual or pedophilic tendencies.

Most of their murals and cameos depict acts of sodomy being done by older men on young boys.

The emperor Caligula was a noted homosexual who even allegedly sodomized his horse.

It's basically from their very ancient history where it was once acceptable to have homosexual relationships with other men. Although this was also true with other ancient cultures, the Greek civilization is very well known and so that stereotypical view of Greek males has stuck.

I think Greek sculptors (and the Roman ones who adopted the same style) idealized the nude, male form (either as young men or mature adult versions) and those statues are still around and people today immediately think of male nudity as a sign of homosexual interests.

I think too that admired masculine traits like hirsuteness (hairiness) can often be seen in Greek men and homosexuals tend to like such traits in men, especially homosexual ones.

Well I am Greek and homosexual.
But it is not the case for everyone, the stereotype comes from the ancient times where it was normal to be a homosexual in ancient Greece. In fact it was an honour and a high society thing.
What is funny though is that Greeks dont realise that they are stereotyped like this, and they say the same thing for the English for some reason, lol..everytime I tell Greeks that the rest of the world thinks that WE are the gay ones they dont believe me...Anyway the reason is because of history, I wish it was the same or at least close to it now...there are many homophobics in Greece still and they are still being tolerated.

For the same reason that homosexuals are often stereotyped as being only effeminate or deviant. It is because people who stereotype take one thing, either from history or from an experience or something they read about or saw on TV, and say that is how that entire group of people behaves or who they are.Stereotyping is common in many things.Consider that some say all Jews are greedy or all Italians are in the Mafia or all Chinese have a small penis.

That is, unfortunately, just how small minded people think.

Basically it was common practice in ancient Greek for an adult man to tutor a teenage boy in education and in fighting skills. They would train together and as payment for teaching the older man would sodomise the younger. This was a habit learned from the Phonecians. It was seen as socially unacceptable for an adult man to recieve anal sex but was seen as fine for him to perform anal sex upon others.
The ancient Romans adopted the practise of homosexuality form the Greeks, indeed Curio The Elder described Caesar as "A man to every woman and a woman to every man".
Other cultures such as the Thracians and Macadonians also adopted this practice. If you see the long and boring film Alexander you will learn more about how common homosexuality was back then.

When people think of Greeks, they think of the muscled, greek Gods dressed in very little, if anything at all. To most people that is very homoerotic and therefore the Greeks are thought of as gay
